Facebook has officially launched its cryptocurrency Libra following great opposition from politicians and US regulators.
The Libra Association the nonprofit that will govern the currency officially signed on 21 charter members but Visa, MasterCard and PayPal succumbed to the pressure and bowed out.
They were replaced by Uber,Lyft, Vodafone and Spotify who signed on in Geneva.
Facebook has faced criticism since it unveiled plans to create a separate, private currency system to allow users to make cross-border payments more easily.
Politicians and US regulators said thry believe Facebook’s struggles with protecting users’ privacy will spill into Libra as well.
