SpongeBob SquarePants Creator Dies At Age 57

SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg has died at age 57 after a long battle with ALS.The animation creator revealed last year in an interview with Variety Magazine that he had been diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease and was planning to continue working on the beloved animation as long as he was able to.

Nickelodeon took to social media saying,”We are sad to share the news of the passing of Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants. Today, we are observing a moment of silence to honor his life and work.”

SpongeBob SquarePants first aired on Nickelodeon in 1999 and is about a anthropomorphic sea sponge and his friends.The show airs in more than 200 countries and been translated into  50 languages.Stephen earned a special Emmy Award earlier this year for his work animation and the show has earned numerous awards including four Emmy Awards since it first aired.
